Tommorow, you tell yourself, you'll train. Honest. But life gets busy and working out is put on the back burner. One day creeps into another; things get in the way; family, work, mates, tv and before you know it you feel shitty; bloated, stressed and hungry for crap food. You start making excuses and rationalising. "Its just this week. I need a rest week. Its periodisation. Some things are more important, yada..yada".. One week turns into two and, despite the rest, its harder to get started again. Your routine and progress are slipping away. A sense of self fades. Its about this time the second horseman of the slacker apocolyspe arrives. Diet slips. You polish off the kids chicken nuggets, sneak an extra square of family block or wolf down takeaway because your just so god dam busy.
Not only are you failing to train your muscles and cardiovascular system, but your resolve and self discipline arent being excercised either, so theyre getting weak too. A few months on and your squarely in the vicinity of "loser central"-home to arse prints on the lounge and junk food. The solution: do something. A walk, a home bodyweight workout, 100 pushups during the ads. Do it every day or twice a day. Soon you'll start to feel on top again, and that walk will turn into a run or hill sprints; a 10 minute bodyweight session into a 45 minute gym workout.
The trick to ending a slump is simple: dont tell yourself you'll train "tommorow". Tommorow never comes, so thats an easy excuse to roll out daily. Instead, tell yourself : I'll train today. If its a dog walk, great, if its 20 minutes on the big four- bench, deads, squats and chins- better still. Consistency is the key.
Anyways, Im off to train. Today.
